Basting cotton, Tacking thread usually consists of loosely spun cotton. With this thicker, but easily tearable thread, textiles are roughly tacked together for a try-on before the actual sewing process in order to check their fit.

Basting thread is helpful:

• for fixing of patterns
• when manufacturing complex workpieces
• for attaching small price tags
• 
   

Note:

Basting cotton / Tacking thread is not tear-resistant, so it is not suitable for looms or other projects where the thread has to be tear-resistant
